City of Vegas de-criminalizes cold canned cervezas

StarkVEGAS that is.

The SDN reports here that the Board of Aldermen voted last night to do away with the archaic law against cold beer in Starkville, MS, home of the Mississippi State University.

Interestingly, P.C. Maclaurin cast the lone dissenting vote and bemoaned the speed of the decision.
"I am bothered by the haste in which this mater is being dealt with," said McLaurin.
Hmmm. Starkville consulted with the Mississippi Attorney General's Office in 1998, at which point the AG "stated that municipalities have no right to regulate the temperature at which alcohol can be sold". I guess 7 years of consideration while in the midst of municipal disobedience to state law qualifies as a hasty, ill-advised, knee-jerk response.
"Our job is to do things that are good for the community," said McLaurin. "I have given a great deal of thought to this issue, and have difficulty coming up with one practical thing that this will accomplish. Many of our local sellers are not interested because of the added cost involved in cold beer..."
Hmmm again. I bet all of the local convenience & grocery stores will take a wait and see approach on whether to move some cokes and gatorade out of the cooler to make room for beer.

The AFA and the ice company are planning to appeal the decision.

I wonder what McLaurin's threshold for "many" is.

He probably likes cold beer as much as the next guy. He just saw the writing on the wall (the motion was gonna pass with or without his vote) so he opposed ini order to cater to the beer bashers.

Politics.
