Oh the shame..

I was reading a former MSMS classmate's blog. He has an interest in regional linguistic variations and posts on the subject from time to time. He recently posted this which contains a link to a simple linguistic profile.

The quiz is very simple but mostly accurate. While I'm not sure what "General American English" is (55%), I am proud to say that I scored 35% dixie. That leaves 10% unaccounted for (ok, ok... 5% of that IS accounted for but I'm in denial). That unmentionable 5% betrays my "secret" family ties... Mom, Dad and the sisters were all born in Chi-town.

I went back and tinkered with some of the answers to see how the results would differ. Some of the questions that made a significant effect on the 'Dixieness' I had never even heard of and I've lived in Dixie all of my life (except for those 3 years in Texas and London).

Anyhow, if you're reading, take the test and post your results.

Your Linguistic Profile:

55% General American English

35% Dixie

5% Yankee

0% Midwestern

0% Upper Midwestern

How weird! I think this quiz is contagious! I found this on a friend's blog today too! And I'm glad to say that even though I had that 5% unmentionable, I had 40% dixie. I'll have Michael try it.--Hilary

Someone on the blog where I found this noticed that I have a missing 5%.

I think lost that part in my last 2 years of high school and first 2 years of college. However, some might argue that I've always been deficient and never had that 5%, while others would think that I just have a portion of unintelligible vocabulary. All three theories are credible. I guess we'll never know.

That 5% is probably buried in the cushions of the Mahogany, and if that is the case, you are most likely better off without it.
